Byker
Byker originated in the 12th century as a Norman serjeantry before evolving from a rural township into a densely populated Victorian industrial area. Following severe housing conditions in the mid-20th century, a pioneering redevelopment programme during the 1970s and 1980s created the internationally acclaimed Byker Estate and its famous Byker Wall.
