Labour Council Invests in Safer Roads and Smoother Journeys with City Centre Junction Upgrade

Newcastle’s Labour Council is continuing to invest in the city’s transport infrastructure, with the final stage of a major upgrade to one of the city centre’s busiest junctions set to be completed through resurfacing works this January.

The improvement scheme at the junction of Collingwood Street, Mosley Street, Groat Market and St Nicholas Street is part of Labour’s ongoing investment to modernise Newcastle’s road network, improve safety and keep traffic moving more efficiently through the city centre.

Following the successful installation of upgraded traffic signals, overnight resurfacing works will complete the project, delivering a smoother road surface and improved junction for motorists, pedestrians and public transport alike.

The wider scheme has included repairing and replacing ageing underground traffic signal ducts—many of which had collapsed—as well as installing modern traffic signal technology that will integrate with Newcastle’s wider traffic management system. Combined with recent improvements at the Mosley Street junctions with Grey Street and Swan House, the investment will help improve traffic flow on one of the city’s key transport corridors.

The project has also made the junction safer for pedestrians through improvements to crossing facilities, including the removal of the central traffic island to provide more accessible and convenient crossing points.

Labour Councillor Marion Williams, Cabinet Member for a Connected, Clean City at Newcastle City Council, said:

“This investment forms part of Labour’s wider programme to modernise traffic signals at key junctions across Newcastle, helping us better manage traffic and keep the city moving.

“With the signal upgrade now complete, resurfacing is the final stage of the project. While this work requires temporary overnight road closures, the long-term benefits will be a safer, smoother and more reliable route through the city centre.

“We’d like to thank residents, businesses and motorists for their patience while these improvements are completed.”

To minimise disruption, the resurfacing will be carried out overnight, with signed diversion routes in place and arrangements made to maintain access for residents, hotel guests and emergency services.

The scheme is another example of Labour’s commitment to investing in Newcastle’s infrastructure, delivering safer roads, better transport links and a city centre that works more effectively for residents, businesses and visitors.
