Labour Council Cracks Down on Dangerous Parking Outside Knop Law Primary School

Newcastle’s Labour Council is taking action to protect children and families at Knop Law Primary School in Chapel House by strengthening enforcement against dangerous parking outside the school gates.

From April 2024, fixed cameras will be used to enforce existing School Keep Clear restrictions, helping prevent vehicles from stopping on the zig zag markings outside the school entrance.

The action follows concerns from the school, parents, residents and local councillors about repeated incidents of unsafe parking during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

The Labour administration is committed to making neighbourhoods safer and ensuring children can walk, scoot or cycle to school without unnecessary risks caused by vehicles blocking key areas.

The rollout of cameras complements Labour’s wider programme of road safety improvements, including School Streets schemes introduced in communities across Newcastle.

Councillor Marion Williams said: “Parents and schools have been clear that dangerous parking outside school gates is a real concern, and we are responding.

“These restrictions are there to protect children, not simply to manage traffic. Where people continue to ignore them, we will take action.

“This is another example of Labour delivering practical improvements that make communities safer.”

The cameras will only monitor restrictions during school arrival and departure times. Drivers who break the rules may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

The Labour Council will continue working with local schools to create safer streets for children and families.
