About Denton and Westerhope
Westerhope was founded in 1895 on Red Cow Farm as a planned “garden village” for working families, later expanding through coal mining before becoming a modern suburb. Its name reflects the hope of creating a healthier community away from the city centre. West Denton evolved from an agricultural township into a major residential area through mining and 20th-century development.
