Gosforth
About Gosforth
Gosforth was first recorded in 1166 as Goseford, a name believed to refer to “the ford where geese dwell” or the crossing over the Ouseburn. Originally a rural agricultural area, it was later shaped by the Surtees and Brandling families. Industrial growth in the 19th century saw the development of collieries, including Gosforth and Coxlodge.
