About Blakelaw and Cowgate
Formerly agricultural moorland, Blakelaw and Cowgate were developed during the 20th century to address growing housing demands. Cowgate emerged in the 1920s, taking its name from the historic route farmers used to drive livestock to Newcastle’s cattle market. Blakelaw, meaning “bleak moorland place,” was built in the late 1930s.
