Hundreds of trees planted as community comes together to boost local green spaces

Volunteers came together in Fenham to plant hundreds of new trees as part of a community effort to create greener neighbourhoods and support nature.

The successful planting event, organised with the Northumberland Wildlife Trust as part of the North East Community Forest programme, saw around 800 beech hedge trees planted at the old quarry field in Fenham, alongside a number of young oak trees.

The new planting will help improve biodiversity, create valuable wildlife habitats and enhance the local environment for generations to come.

Labour Councillor Rebecca Shatwell joined local volunteers at the event and praised everyone involved for helping make a lasting difference to the area.

Cllr Rebecca Shatwell said:

“It was fantastic to see so many people giving up their time to help make the area greener. Planting 800 beech hedge trees, alongside new oak trees, is a real investment in the future of our community and our environment.

“These trees will provide important habitats for wildlife, improve our local green spaces and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. I’d like to thank everyone who took part, as well as Northumberland Wildlife Trust and the North East Community Forest for making the project possible.”

The tree planting is part of ongoing work to improve green spaces across Newcastle, supporting local wildlife while creating healthier, more attractive places for residents to enjoy.
