Creating a cleaner, greener neighbourhood is one of Labour’s priorities for Blakelaw.
Following visits to local primary schools, councillors listened to children who shared their ideas for improving the environment. They spoke about wanting more flowers, greater biodiversity, cleaner air and fewer cars around school gates.
These conversations have already led to positive action, including planting spring bulbs in local parks, with children helping to plant hedgerows to encourage wildlife.
The team is also working with Sustrans on initiatives to reduce congestion around schools through the Park and Stride scheme.
Across the ward, new trees, hedging and wildflower meadows are also being planted as part of the North East Community Forest project.
Regular community litter picks continue to bring together local residents, schoolchildren and volunteers to help keep Blakelaw looking its best.
If you’d like to get involved in a future community clean-up, the local Labour team would love to hear from you.
