Shielding The Most Vulnerable: New Council Tax Support Scheme

The last Coalition government (the Tories propped up by the LibDems) stated that everyone had to pay something towards their Council Tax, regardless of their circumstances or need.

As a consequence, the council has been forced to increase the amount disabled people pay to 15%, equivalent to £2.83 a week for a band A household.

However, Labour-led Newcastle City Council does not want to impose these costs on residents struggling to get by, and has taken the decision to protect 14,000 low-income families entitled to Council Tax support. The council will be reducing the amount they pay, from reducing from 20% to 15%.
