School Streets trial brings safer journeys to Lemington Riverside pupils

Children and families at Lemington Riverside Primary School are being given the chance to experience a safer and quieter journey to school as Newcastle Labour brings its School Streets programme to Lemington.

The Labour-led council will hold a one-day School Streets trial outside Lemington Riverside on Friday 22 October, temporarily restricting through traffic on Sugley Street.

The road will be closed to through traffic between 8am and 4pm, creating additional space for children and their families to walk, cycle and scoot safely to and from school.

Residents, Blue Badge holders and people who need access to properties on Sugley Street will continue to be allowed through during the trial.

Families who need to drive for part of their journey are being encouraged to park away from the school gates and walk the remaining distance.

The trial forms part of Labour’s work to explore how School Streets could be introduced more widely across Newcastle, helping improve road safety and create healthier journeys for children and young people.

It follows a successful trial at Chillingham Road Primary School in September and is one of three further events being held across Newcastle this week.

The council has written to Lemington Riverside families and local residents to explain the trial and invite them to provide feedback on how it works.

Cllr Ged Bell, Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet Member for Development, Transport and Neighbourhoods, said: “The trial event at Chillingham Road Primary School was very successful, with children able to enjoy safer travel to and from school.

“It has helped to highlight the many benefits for pupils and their families as well as for residents on the street.

“I’m delighted that we are now able to carry out more trial events at other schools as this will help us to understand how we can develop our plans for School Streets to be put in place across the city.”

Labour will use feedback from Lemington Riverside families and local residents to help assess the trial and inform future plans for safer journeys to school.
