Children and families at Grange First School in Gosforth are being given more space to walk, cycle and scoot to school as part of Newcastle Labour’s School Streets programme.
Newcastle’s Labour-led council is holding a one-day School Streets trial at Grange First School on Thursday 21 October, temporarily restricting through traffic outside the school.
Norham Road will be closed to through traffic between 8am and 4pm, creating a safer and more welcoming environment around the school gates.
Residents, Blue Badge holders and people who need to access properties on the street will still be able to do so, but through traffic and parking immediately outside the school will not be permitted during the trial.
Families who need to drive for part of their journey are being encouraged to park further away and walk the final part of their journey.
The trial follows a successful School Streets event at Chillingham Road Primary School in September and will help Labour understand how similar schemes could work at more schools across Newcastle.
The council has written to families and residents in the area to explain the arrangements and ask them to provide feedback on their experiences.
Cllr Ged Bell, Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet Member for Development, Transport and Neighbourhoods, said: “The trial event at Chillingham Road Primary School was very successful, with children able to enjoy safer travel to and from school.
“It has helped to highlight the many benefits for pupils and their families as well as for residents on the street.
“I’m delighted that we are now able to carry out more trial events at other schools as this will help us to understand how we can develop our plans for School Streets to be put in place across the city.”
Labour will use feedback from Grange First families and the surrounding community to help shape the future development of School Streets in Newcastle.
