Newcastle Labour is asking residents and businesses to help shape the next phase of improvements to Gosforth High Street before the council moves to final decisions.
The proposals aim to improve road safety, strengthen public-transport connections and make walking and cycling easier. Consultation material covers the section between Gosforth Central Park and the Regent Centre area.
Gosforth High Street must work for shoppers, traders, bus passengers, pedestrians, cyclists and residents. Local experience will be essential in identifying practical changes and any unintended consequences before final decisions are taken.
The consultation runs until 27 April. We encourage everyone who uses the High Street to study the plans and submit their views through the council’s engagement platform.
Labour wants the High Street to remain a successful local centre while becoming safer and easier to use by bus, on foot and by cycle. Achieving that balance requires detailed local knowledge about deliveries, parking, crossings, congestion and the needs of people with limited mobility.
This consultation must be a genuine part of designing the scheme. Labour representatives will scrutinise the responses, press for problems to be addressed and make sure the voices of residents, traders and regular High Street users are not reduced to a box-ticking exercise.
