A new development of 38 assisted-living apartments has opened in Kenton, providing high-quality new homes designed to help older residents remain independent.
Kilbourn House, on Newlyn Road, has been delivered as part of Newcastle Labour’s programme to increase the range of housing available to older people across the city.
The development provides 38 one- and two-bedroom apartments alongside communal facilities and an on-site café, combining residents’ own homes with access to care and support when they need it.
Kilbourn House has been designed to provide an alternative for older people who want to maintain their independence but require additional support with some aspects of day-to-day life.
Residents have their own modern apartment while specially trained staff are available to provide care and reassurance.
The development also includes communal spaces where residents can meet and take part in activities, helping Kilbourn House become part of the wider community rather than simply providing accommodation.
The new homes have been developed by Leazes Homes in partnership with Newcastle City Council and Your Homes Newcastle, with Galliford Try responsible for construction.
Kilbourn House follows the opening of Trevelyan Court in Newbiggin Hall earlier this year as Labour and its housing partners continue a wider programme of new assisted-living accommodation across Newcastle. When Trevelyan Court opened, Leazes Homes confirmed that Kilbourn House would be the next of three extra-care schemes being developed in partnership with the council and Your Homes Newcastle.
The investment is part of Labour’s commitment to ensure Newcastle’s housing keeps pace with the changing needs of an ageing population and gives older residents more choice about where and how they live.
Cllr Ged Bell said: “Kilbourn House is a fantastic addition to Kenton and another example of the investment Labour is making in high-quality housing for older people across Newcastle.
“These 38 new apartments will allow residents to enjoy the independence of having a home of their own, while knowing that care and support is there when they need it.
“We want Newcastle to be a city where people can live independently and with dignity as they grow older. Developments like Kilbourn House are helping us provide the range of homes and support needed to make that possible.”
