Plans have been unveiled for a major transformation of Newcastle Central Station and the surrounding area.
The project includes an £8.6 million programme of improvements inside the station alongside further investment in the surrounding streets and public spaces.
Central Station is one of the principal gateways to Newcastle. It welcomes millions of passengers and gives many visitors their first impression of our city. Improving the station and its surroundings will support the city centre, encourage investment and provide passengers with a more attractive and accessible arrival point.
The proposed work will improve passenger facilities, create additional commercial space and open up the station’s historic portico.
Improvements to the public realm will help connect the station more effectively with the city centre and nearby development sites.
Newcastle’s Labour-led council is supporting the transformation as part of our wider approach to economic development and the regeneration of the Stephenson Quarter.
We are using the council’s planning responsibilities, land and relationships with public and private partners to help bring major projects forward. By investing in important infrastructure, we can build confidence in Newcastle and encourage further development.
Our aim is not simply to improve buildings. Regeneration should create employment, strengthen local supply chains and provide new opportunities for residents. We will continue working with the organisations involved to maximise the benefits for Newcastle.
Today’s announcement begins the next stage of a significant programme. We will keep residents informed as work progresses and ensure that public investment delivers lasting value for the city.
Leader of Newcastle Labour, Cllr Nick Forbes said:
“Central Station is a vital gateway to Newcastle and an important part of our economic infrastructure. Its transformation will give residents and visitors a much better welcome while supporting regeneration, investment and employment around the Stephenson Quarter.”
