Newcastle Labour has slammed the Liberal Democrats for using last night’s Full Council meeting to chase headlines rather than contribute to the work of improving the city.
Newcastle Labour continues to deliver on major priorities including investment in neighbourhoods and improvements to local services. That work is ongoing and grounded in evidence, consultation and practical delivery.
By contrast, the Liberal Democrats offer little substance and the motions they presented at last night’s council meeting failed to provide workable outcomes.
Last night their approach was clear:
* Their motion on ward meeting publicity attempted to create the appearance of a problem rather than offering any meaningful improvement to how residents can reach their councillors.
* Their motion on Section 106 funding implied that legally committed money was being withheld even though it is already allocated to school places, highways improvements and affordable housing.
* They voted against Newcastle Labour’s effort to improve transport in the west and outer west of the city and opposed the call for the Tyne and Wear Pension Fund to divest from companies involved in serious human rights abuses, turning away from a clear commitment to bring the fund’s investments into line with ethical principles and international law.
* They also voted against our motion celebrating Unison’s Stars in Our Schools which recognises the dedication of hardworking school staff and attempted to dilute its intent.
Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said:
“The chamber is a place for political debate, but we also have a responsibility to deliver for residents. Labour is focused on that work every day. What we saw last night from the Liberal Democrats was theatre in place of substance. Motions that cannot be implemented do not help our communities. Residents deserve politicians that solve problems, not politicians that search for headlines. I am all for a bit of political theatre, but the Liberal Democrats turned tonight’s meeting into a pantomime.”
Newcastle Labour will continue delivering for residents. The city deserves progress, not performance.
