Kenton Labour councillors have welcomed an additional £31,000 investment in North Kenton Park as part of ongoing work to improve the local environment and neighbourhood facilities.
The extra investment will support improvements to the park, with broken toddler play equipment already repaired and further work planned to improve the space for local families.
A new North Kenton Park Action Group will also be established over the coming months, giving residents and community organisations an opportunity to help shape the future of the park.
Kenton Labour councillor Anya Durrant has been appointed to the board of Urban Green Newcastle, the independent charity responsible for maintaining North Kenton Park, providing a direct link between the organisation and the local community.
The park investment forms part of a wider programme of practical environmental improvements being delivered across Kenton.
Planters at North Kenton Shops have been restored with new flowers and bulbs, while barrier planters at the top of Kenton Lane, close to Kenton School, have also been replenished.
Community action is playing an important part in improving the neighbourhood, with litter picks organised by the Church of the Ascension and supported through Kenton Bright Ideas funding.
Work has also taken place to clear litter around Kenton Shops, while the council is working with local organisations and Mountfield Primary School to encourage everyone to play their part in keeping the area clean.
The improvements sit alongside Newcastle Labour’s wider commitment to make the city carbon neutral by 2030 and ensure action on the environment results in visible improvements in neighbourhoods.
Cllr Anya Durrant said: “North Kenton Park is an important community space and this additional £31,000 investment gives us an opportunity to make practical improvements for local families.
“We’ve already seen the toddler equipment repaired, and establishing a new Park Action Group will give residents a stronger voice in deciding what happens next.
“Alongside the investment in the park, we’re working with residents, schools and community organisations on the everyday issues that matter locally – from litter and neglected planters to making our neighbourhood greener and more attractive.
“Labour councillors will continue working with the community to secure improvements and make Kenton an even better place to live.”
