Families at Westerhope Primary School will see tougher action against dangerous parking as Newcastle’s Labour Council introduces new measures to improve safety outside the school gates.
Fixed cameras are being installed to enforce existing School Keep Clear restrictions, targeting vehicles that stop on the zig zag lines and create unsafe conditions for children.
The move follows concerns raised by the school, parents, residents and local councillors about repeated parking issues in the area.
By keeping school entrances clear, the Labour Council is helping children cross roads safely and supporting families who choose to walk, scoot or cycle to school.
The new enforcement measures are part of Labour’s wider commitment to improving road safety across Newcastle, alongside successful School Streets schemes designed to make areas around schools safer and healthier.
Councillor Marion Williams said:
“Making sure children can get to school safely is one of our key priorities.
“We know that dangerous parking outside schools causes concern for families, and these cameras will help ensure existing rules are followed.
“This is about creating safer, cleaner streets where children and communities can thrive.”
The cameras will only be used during school travel times, with Penalty Charge Notices issued by post where drivers fail to comply.
The Labour Council will continue taking action to improve safety across Newcastle’s neighbourhoods.
