Children and families at Archbishop Runcie C of E First School in Gosforth will benefit from tougher action on dangerous parking outside the school gates as Newcastle’s Labour Council steps up efforts to make journeys to school safer.
From April 2024, fixed cameras will be introduced outside the school to enforce existing School Keep Clear restrictions and tackle motorists who put children at risk by parking on the zig zag lines outside the entrance.
The move follows concerns raised by the school, parents, residents and local councillors about repeated problems with vehicles stopping where they should not, creating hazards for children walking, scooting or cycling to school.
The Labour-led council is introducing the cameras at locations where there have been persistent issues, helping to ensure school entrances remain clear and safer for pupils.
The enforcement action builds on Labour’s wider work to improve road safety around schools, including the introduction of successful School Streets schemes across Newcastle.
Labour Councillor Marion Williams, Cabinet Member for a Connected, Clean City at Newcastle City Council, said:
> “Road safety outside schools is a priority for us, and we know this is an issue that matters greatly to parents, pupils and local communities.
“School Keep Clear restrictions exist for a reason — to keep entrances clear, reduce danger and help children arrive and leave school safely.
“Where these restrictions are repeatedly ignored, we are taking action. These cameras will help deter dangerous parking and make sure children and families have safer journeys to school.”
The cameras will only operate during school arrival and leaving times, with enforcement taking place on the existing restrictions. Drivers who fail to comply may receive a Penalty Charge Notice by post.
The Labour Council will continue working with schools, parents and communities to make Newcastle’s streets safer for everyone.
