Labour Council Protects Children with New School Safety Measures at Jesmond Park Academy

Newcastle’s Labour Council is taking action to improve road safety outside Jesmond Park Academy in High Heaton by introducing tougher enforcement against dangerous parking.

Fixed cameras are being installed to monitor existing School Keep Clear restrictions and deter drivers from stopping on the zig zag lines outside the school gates.

The measures follow concerns from the school, parents, residents and local councillors about repeated parking problems and the impact this can have on young people travelling to school.

The Labour-led council is committed to ensuring school entrances remain safe and accessible, supporting pupils who walk, cycle or use other active travel options.

The new enforcement forms part of Labour’s wider programme to improve road safety across Newcastle, including School Streets schemes that create safer environments around schools.

Councillor Marion Williams said:

“Children and young people deserve to feel safe when travelling to school.

“Where parking restrictions are ignored, it can create real dangers, and we are taking action to address those concerns.

“These cameras will help make sure existing rules are followed and provide reassurance to families and the wider community.”

The cameras will only be active during school arrival and departure times. Drivers who do not comply with the restrictions may receive a Penalty Charge Notice by post.

The Labour Council will continue investing in measures that make Newcastle safer, greener and more accessible for everyone.
