Former Newcastle City Council Leader, and councillor for West Fenham, Karen Kilgour has been recognised for her outstanding service to the city after being awarded the title of Honorary Alderman of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Karen Kilgour was first elected to Newcastle City Council in 2014, representing Fenham before later serving the West Fenham ward following boundary changes. She joined the Cabinet in 2018 as Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care before going on to serve as Deputy Leader of the Council. In 2024, Karen made history by becoming Newcastle’s first female Council Leader.
At last night’s meeting of Newcastle City Council, Karen was awarded the honorary title of Honorary Alderman in recognition of her dedicated service and contribution to the city and its residents.
Leader of the Newcastle Labour Group, Councillor Ged Bell, congratulated Karen on receiving the honour.
“Karen has dedicated many years to serving the people of Newcastle with determination, compassion and commitment. As the city’s first female Council Leader, she broke new ground while always putting the interests of Newcastle and its residents first.
