After more than five decades of unwavering commitment to Newcastle and its communities, Jeremy Beecham has retired from public life, bringing to a close an extraordinary 55 years of continuous service as an elected representative.
Jeremy was first elected as councillor for Benwell in May 1967 and quickly established himself as a champion for local people. He became Chair of the Social Services Committee in 1973 before being elected Leader of Newcastle City Council in 1977. Over the next 17 years, he helped shape the city through a period of significant change, making him the longest-serving Leader in the council’s history.
His influence extended well beyond Newcastle. In 1991, Jeremy became Chair of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities and later played a leading role in bringing together local government organisations to create the Local Government Association in 1997. As the founding Chair of the LGA, he helped establish it as the national voice of local government, leading the cross-party organisation for nine years.
Jeremy’s distinguished public service has been recognised throughout his career. He was knighted in 1994, awarded the Freedom of the City of Newcastle in 1995, and appointed to the House of Lords in 2010. During his time in Parliament, he served in a number of roles, including Shadow Justice Minister, before retiring from the Lords in 2021.
Reflecting on his retirement from Newcastle City Council, Jeremy said:
“I feel very honoured to have served on Newcastle City Council as a councillor for Benwell, and latterly Benwell and Scotswood, for the past 55 years. It has been a true privilege to have worked with Labour colleagues to address the needs of the ward and its people, especially those in most need of support. I will miss my connection with the people of Benwell and Scotswood and I am confident that my successor, together with my current colleagues, will continue to work hard on their behalf.”
Paying tribute, Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party at the time, described Jeremy as “a giant of the Labour movement” whose influence on local government and the wider Labour Party had been immense. He praised Jeremy’s decades of public service, leadership and dedication, wishing him and his family every happiness in retirement.
Then Newcastle City Council Labour Leader, Cllr Nick Forbes, also paid tribute, describing Jeremy as an inspiration to generations of Newcastle politicians. He highlighted Jeremy’s lifelong commitment to tackling poverty, supporting children and families, and delivering policies that improved the lives of thousands of people, while noting that his modesty often meant his achievements went unrecognised.
Jeremy’s ward colleagues, Cllr Hazel Stephenson and Cllr Rob Higgins, reflected on his dedication to Benwell and Scotswood, saying:
“It’s been a pleasure to work alongside Jeremy as part of the Labour team in Benwell and Scotswood. His dedication to serving our community is legendary; there isn’t a family he hasn’t helped, or a local community group he hasn’t supported. He’s been consistently active in the ward despite all the other positions he’s undertaken, and we wish him a much deserved long and happy retirement.”
