Councillor Susan Anthony and Chi Onwurah MP Visit Shafto Courts Wednesday Group

Benwell and Scotswood Councillor Susan Anthony and Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Shafto Courts Wednesday Group, where they heard about the incredible work being done to support local residents and bring the community together.

The weekly group provides a welcoming space for more than 30 residents from Shafto Courts and the surrounding area, helping people stay connected, enjoy activities and support one another. The dedicated volunteers also prepare around 50 meals each week, with 20 meals delivered directly to residents in their own homes.

During the visit, Susan and Chi heard first-hand about the positive impact the group has on the local community and the important role it plays in tackling isolation and creating friendships.

The visit ended with some friendly competition, as everyone enjoyed a few games of bingo together. As a special thank you, one resident presented Chi Onwurah MP with a beautiful 900th Anniversary plate to mark the occasion.

Councillor Susan Anthony said:

“It was wonderful to spend time with the Shafto Courts Wednesday Group and see the fantastic work they do week in, week out. The commitment of the volunteers and the support residents provide for each other is truly inspiring. Groups like this are at the heart of our communities, helping people stay connected, supported and valued.”

The Benwell and Scotswood Labour team would like to thank everyone involved with the Shafto Courts Wednesday Group for their warm welcome and for all the hard work they do to support local residents.
