Chillingham Road included in programme to strengthen east Newcastle high streets

Newcastle Labour is investing in Chillingham Road through the council-led Inclusive Healthy Vibrant High Streets programme, supporting local traders and improving the neighbourhood centre.

The council-led project is supported by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the North East Combined Authority acting as lead authority. It covers Chillingham Road alongside Shields Road, Heaton Park Road, Heaton Road and Welbeck Road.

The programme is intended to bring more activity to local shopping areas, support community events and encourage people to spend time in neighbourhood centres. Strong high streets matter to residents, independent traders and the local jobs they sustain.

Newcastle Labour will keep residents informed about Chillingham Road projects and opportunities to participate as the programme develops.

The project brings council leadership together with UK Shared Prosperity Fund support and the North East Combined Authority. Its purpose is to turn residents’ ideas into visible activity, greener and more welcoming public space, and stronger reasons for people to shop and spend time locally.

Labour will work with independent businesses, community organisations and residents as individual projects develop. Chillingham Road’s success depends on practical delivery that reflects how the street is used every day, not a one-size-fits-all city-centre approach.

Councillor Lara Ellis said:

“Chillingham Road is an important local centre for residents and independent businesses. Labour will use this programme to champion Chillingham Road and want future activity to reflect the ideas of traders, shoppers and the wider community.”
