Newcastle Labour is investing £90,000 to improve play provision in Castle ward through the city’s new £1.5 million programme of neighbourhood improvements.
The improvement forms part of Newcastle City Council’s £1.5 million programme to create better and more inclusive play spaces across the city.
Local residents, schools and community organisations will have opportunities to help develop the proposals. Listening to children and families will ensure the funding is directed towards the equipment and improvements that will be most useful.
Accessible, attractive and well-maintained play areas make an important contribution to family life. They encourage children to spend time outdoors, remain active and develop friendships within their community.
Newcastle Labour wants children in every neighbourhood to have access to good-quality places to play. We will work with Castle residents as the plans move forward.
The programme was approved by Newcastle’s Labour-led Cabinet because good-quality play facilities are part of the basic infrastructure families deserve. Free local spaces help children stay active and build friendships, while giving parents and carers somewhere welcoming to meet.
Labour will ensure residents, schools and community organisations can shape the detailed proposal. The final design should reflect children’s ideas, address accessibility properly and leave Castle with a lasting community asset.
Labour Councillor Andrew Herridge said:
“Families understand better than anyone what their local play area needs. This £90,000 Labour investment is an important commitment and want residents to play a leading role in deciding how it is used.”
