Today, we mark the centenary of the Montagu Pit Disaster, a tragedy that struck Scotswood on 30th March 1925, claiming the lives of 38 miners when the pit flooded.
This week, our community has united to honour their memory through a series of events, including a guided walk from Bell’s Close to Scotswood, organised by St James’ Heritage & Environment Group.
Today, Benwell and Scotswood councillors Rob Higgins, Hazel Stephenson, and Susan Anthony attended a special memorial service at St Margaret’s Church and Parish Centre in Scotswood, where the community came together to pay their respects.
Cllr Higgins said:
“Delighted that your Benwell Scotswood Labour Team was able to support a wonderfully moving event commemorating the centenary of the Montagu pit disaster. Some impressive paintings by local artists and moving stories from family members and others of loved ones lost in the tragedy. Our thanks go to Scotswood Village Residents Association for their hard work in arranging this and similar events over the years”.
