Newcastle Labour welcomes support of Show Racism the Red Card

“Newcastle Labour wholeheartedly welcomes the decision to light up the Civic Centre and Tyne Bridge in support of Show Racism the Red Card.

“Show Racism the Red Card was founded here in the North East and has spent decades doing vital work in our schools, communities and football clubs to challenge racism, educate young people and bring people together.

“Newcastle Labour has a long and proud history of supporting that work. Labour-led Newcastle City Council has backed Show Racism the Red Card over many years because we believe tackling racism is not something that should ever become optional or dependent on the political weather of the day.

“At a time when others are choosing to withdraw their support, I am particularly proud that Newcastle is sending the opposite message. We are a diverse, welcoming and outward-looking city, and we will continue to stand alongside organisations working to challenge racism, hatred and division wherever they occur.

“Lighting up two of our city’s most recognisable landmarks is symbolic, but the commitment behind it goes much deeper. Newcastle Labour will continue to stand with Show Racism the Red Card, support anti-racism education and speak up for the values of tolerance, equality and solidarity that have long defined our city.

“Our message is simple: racism has no place in Newcastle, and we will never be afraid to say so.”
