Newcastle City Council has unanimously backed a Labour motion paying tribute to Kevin Keegan and committing the city to work with Newcastle United and other partners to find an appropriate way to recognise his contribution to Newcastle.
The motion, moved by Newcastle Labour Group Leader Cllr Ged Bell and seconded by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, received support from councillors across the chamber.
It offered the council’s sincere condolences to Kevin’s family and friends and paid tribute to the man affectionately known across the city as “King Kev”.
The motion recognised Kevin as one of football’s greatest players, a hugely important manager for Newcastle United and a respected figure throughout the game. It also recognised the enormous contribution he made to Newcastle and the special place he holds in the hearts of people across the city.
Most importantly, the council has now committed to working with Newcastle United Football Club and other partners to ensure Kevin Keegan’s contribution to both the club and the city is marked in the most appropriate way.
Cllr Ged Bell, Leader of Newcastle Labour Group, said:
“Kevin Keegan meant so much to Newcastle and its people. He didn’t just transform our football club, he gave the whole city confidence, excitement and belief.
“The affection people in Newcastle have for King Kev goes far beyond football. He understood this city, embraced it and became part of it.
“I was proud to move this motion and I’m pleased it received unanimous support from councillors across the chamber. It shows just how much Kevin meant to our city.
“We now want to see the council work with Newcastle United and other partners to consider how we can properly recognise everything Kevin gave to our club and our city.
“There will be many ideas about what form that tribute should take, and it is right that we work together to find something fitting and lasting.”
The unanimous passing of the motion means the council will now work with Newcastle United and other partners to consider the most appropriate way for the city to permanently recognise Kevin’s contribution.
For Newcastle, Kevin Keegan will always be King Kev.
