Two former Newcastle City Council members for Callerton and Throckley have been recognised for their dedicated service to the city after being awarded the title of Honorary Alderman of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Linda Wright was first elected to Newcastle City Council in a November 1996 by-election for Newburn ward, later representing Callerton and Throckley following boundary changes. As the 100th woman elected to the council, she went on to chair the Cityworks Committee, serve as Cabinet Member for the Environment, and in 2017 proudly followed in the footsteps of her mother, Councillor Belle Nixon, by becoming Lord Mayor of Newcastle.
Steve Fairlie was first elected to Newcastle City Council in 2012 for Newburn ward before later representing Callerton and Throckley following boundary changes. During his time on the council, he served as Vice Chair of the Licensing Committee, making an important contribution to the council’s work and the communities he represented.
At last night’s meeting of Newcastle City Council, both Linda Wright and Steve Fairlie were awarded the honorary title of Honorary Alderman in recognition of their commitment and service to the city and its residents.
Leader of the Newcastle Labour Group, Councillor Ged Bell, congratulated both former councillors on receiving the honour.
“Linda and Steve have each made a significant contribution to Newcastle through their years of dedicated public service. On behalf of the Newcastle Labour Group, I would like to thank them both for everything they have done for our city and congratulate them on this thoroughly well-deserved honour. Their commitment to the people of Newcastle has left a lasting legacy, and it is fitting that they have been recognised in this way.”
