Labour’s campaign for better play facilities in Lemington ward has delivered a £53,000 investment in Blucher Play Area.
Newcastle City Council has approved £53,000 for improvements to the play area in Blucher, providing new investment in facilities for children and families in the village.
The investment follows calls from Lemington Labour councillors for Blucher to be included in the next phase of Newcastle’s programme of play-area improvements.
Labour councillor Stephen Lambert raised the issue directly with the council, asking for Blucher Play Area, alongside facilities at Maple Close and Waverley Park, to be included in future investment.
The £53,000 approval means Blucher is now benefiting from that programme.
Labour has been working to improve play facilities across Newcastle so that children and young people have good-quality places close to home where they can play, socialise and stay active.
For smaller communities such as Blucher, investment in neighbourhood facilities is particularly important, ensuring families do not have to travel elsewhere to access good-quality outdoor play spaces.
The council’s monitoring of open space investment records Blucher Play Area among the notable facilities improved during 2022/23.
Labour’s Barry Phillipson said: “We’ve been pressing for investment in Blucher Play Area because families in every part of Lemington ward deserve good-quality facilities close to home.
“Securing £53,000 for Blucher is a welcome result and will mean practical improvements for children and families in the village.
“We’ll continue making the case for investment in play facilities across Lemington ward and working to ensure our communities get their fair share of improvements.”
