Newcastle Central Station’s transformed portico has opened following major investment in one of the city’s most important gateways.
The work has created additional retail space, improved passenger facilities and delivered a brighter and more welcoming entrance to the station. Improvements to the surrounding public realm are also helping provide a better connection between the station and the city centre.
Central Station serves residents travelling for work and leisure while welcoming millions of visitors to Newcastle. Its appearance and accessibility are therefore important to the city’s economy and reputation.
Our Labour-led council has supported the project as part of our wider programme to regenerate the city centre and attract investment to the Stephenson Quarter.
By improving this important arrival point, we can support nearby businesses, encourage further development and give visitors a stronger first impression of Newcastle. The project also complements longer-term plans to bring surrounding sites back into productive use.
Regeneration must, however, be judged by more than improvements to buildings. We want investment to create employment, strengthen local supply chains and open new opportunities for Newcastle residents.
The station’s transformation has required cooperation between the council and its partners. It demonstrates how public and private organisations can work together to improve essential infrastructure and deliver lasting value for the city.
We will continue supporting investment that strengthens Newcastle’s economy while pressing to ensure that communities throughout the city can benefit from its growth.
Newcastle Labour Leader, Cllr Nick Forbes said:
“Central Station is the front door to Newcastle for millions of passengers. Its transformation provides a much more welcoming entrance to our city and will support further investment, business growth and employment around the Stephenson Quarter.”
