Newcastle Labour has set out our commitment to a fair and inclusive recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
The crisis has affected every part of the city, but its consequences have not been shared equally. Residents in insecure employment, people on lower incomes and communities already experiencing poor health have often faced the greatest risks.
Our recovery must do more than return Newcastle to the position it occupied before COVID-19. It must address the inequalities that made some residents more vulnerable in the first place.
Employment will be central to that work. The Jobs and Skills Hub is bringing advice, training and vacancies together for residents who have lost work or face an uncertain future.
We will work with employers, trade unions and education providers to support secure jobs and help residents gain skills linked to opportunities in Newcastle’s changing economy.
The city centre and local high streets will also require continued support. Businesses need confidence, practical advice and investment as restrictions are gradually lifted.
Public health must remain at the heart of the recovery. We will build on the cooperation developed between the council, NHS, care providers and voluntary organisations during the emergency.
Community groups have reached residents who might otherwise have been isolated or excluded. Their knowledge and relationships must be valued in the decisions ahead.
Labour councillors will ensure that neighbourhood experiences influence the citywide recovery. Every community should be able to see how investment and services are improving residents’ lives.
The council cannot deliver recovery alone. We will work with organisations throughout Newcastle while pressing the government for the powers and resources our city needs.
