New measures to tackle dangerous parking outside Westgate Hill Primary School in Arthur’s Hill are being introduced by Newcastle’s Labour Council to help children and families travel to school safely.
Fixed cameras will enforce existing School Keep Clear restrictions outside the school, helping stop motorists from parking on the zig zag markings designed to keep entrances clear.
The action comes after concerns were raised by the school, parents, residents and local councillors about repeated parking problems.
Labour is committed to improving road safety and making Newcastle’s streets work better for everyone. The new cameras build on wider measures including School Streets schemes that support safer walking, cycling and scooting routes.
Councillor Marion Williams said:
“School gates should be safe places where children can arrive and leave without unnecessary risks.
“We have listened to concerns from local communities and are now strengthening enforcement where existing restrictions are repeatedly ignored.
“This is a simple but important measure that will help protect children and make journeys to school safer.”
The cameras will operate only during the morning and afternoon periods when children are travelling to and from school. Drivers who breach the restrictions may receive a Penalty Charge Notice.
The Labour Council is continuing to deliver improvements that make local communities safer, healthier and more welcoming places to live.
