Labour Council Delivers Safer School Gates at Benfield School

Pupils, parents and staff at Benfield School in Walkergate will benefit from stronger action against dangerous parking as Newcastle’s Labour Council works to make the journey to school safer.

Fixed enforcement cameras are being introduced outside the school to tackle motorists who ignore existing School Keep Clear restrictions and park on the zig zag lines outside the gates.

The changes follow concerns from the school, local residents, parents and councillors about repeated parking problems that can create dangerous situations for young people arriving at and leaving school.

The Labour-led council is targeting locations where there is a clear need for ongoing enforcement, ensuring that school entrances remain accessible and safer for children.

The measures are part of Labour’s wider approach to improving road safety across Newcastle, including School Streets schemes that help create safer environments for walking, cycling and scooting.

Councillor Marion Williams said:

“We want every child in Newcastle to have a safe journey to school.

“Parking on School Keep Clear markings can create serious risks, particularly at busy times when lots of children are arriving or leaving.

“By introducing fixed cameras at locations where problems persist, we are making sure these important restrictions are properly enforced.”

The cameras will only operate during morning and afternoon school travel times. Any driver who fails to comply with the restrictions may receive a Penalty Charge Notice by post.

The Labour Council is continuing to work with schools and communities to improve safety and make Newcastle a cleaner, safer city for everyone.
