Newcastle Labour is investing £90,000 in a Byker play area, giving local children and families the opportunity to shape better and more inclusive facilities.
The investment is part of a £1.5 million Newcastle City Council programme intended to provide better and more inclusive play opportunities across the city.
Local children, families and community groups will have the opportunity to help develop the plans. Their views will be important in deciding what new equipment and accessibility improvements should be provided.
Good-quality play areas encourage children to be active, explore and make new friends. They also provide free and accessible places where families can spend time together within their neighbourhood.
Newcastle Labour is committed to improving community facilities in Byker. We will work to ensure local voices remain at the centre of this project as it progresses.
The funding is part of the £1.5 million play programme approved by the council’s Labour-led Cabinet. It directs investment into neighbourhoods where better free facilities can make a practical difference to family life, children’s health and the opportunities available close to home.
Labour’s job does not end with announcing the money. We will involve children, parents, carers and community organisations in the design and press for a safe, accessible and imaginative space that reflects what Byker families tell us they need.
