Newcastle Labour is proud to be working more closely with our city’s veteran community through a new series of support events aimed at helping veterans and their families access the services they need.
The first event, a veterans’ breakfast held last weekend at the Civic Centre, focused on housing support and was attended by Council Leader Cllr Karen Kilgour and Cabinet Member for Housing Cllr Paula Maines. Council officers were also on hand to guide veterans through the housing application process.
As part of this renewed commitment, the council has introduced a new priority band (B+) to make it easier for veterans moving on from supported accommodation to access social housing.
Newcastle has long valued the service and sacrifice of our armed forces. We recognise not only the dedication of those who serve, but also the impact military life has on their families. These events are part of our ongoing effort to honour that contribution and ensure veterans and their loved ones feel supported, respected, and at home in our city.
Cllr Maines said:
“This breakfast marked the beginning of a new journey, one where we listen more closely, act more quickly, and build stronger relationships with those who’ve served our country. For everything they’ve given, it’s our duty and our privilege to ensure their post-service life in Newcastle is secure, supported, and full of opportunity.”
