Chi Onwurah MP and Vince Barry-Stanners at Holy Spirit Church marking VE Day

This week community activist Vince Barry-Stanners helped run a local VE Day ‘Memory Café’ at the Holy Spirit Church on Dunblane Crescent. The event, funded by Newcastle City Council, brought together people from across the Outer West of our city to swap stories, listen to music from the war, and to remember the struggle which freed Europe from tyranny.

Speaking after the event Vince said:

“It was lovely to see people from all backgrounds and of all ages coming together to remember the sacrifices and struggles which led to the Allied victory in the Second World War. From hearing a recording of the radio broadcast announcing the German surrender, singing song which helped Brits through the war, to listening to the stories of those who lived through the conflict, it was incredibly moving to see our community come together with such a sense of ‘wartime spirit’ and pride.”

Local MP, Chi Onwurah, who attended the event said it was a “Fabulous VE Day Memory Cafe at Holy Spirit Church in West Denton with “Afternoon Tea and Songs that Won the War.

A war fought by and for strong communities like this one and the freedoms which enable us all to enjoy them.”
